It is with deep sadness that we have received the news of the death of Prof. Karol Rafał Bula - an outstanding musicologist, teacher and music publicist. A man of great knowledge, always involved in the affairs of our theatre, a long-time member of the Silesian Opera Program Council, co-founder, juror and artistic director (in 1994, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012) of the Adam Didur International Opera Singers' Competition in Bytom.
Karol Rafał Bula completed theoretical studies at the State Higher School of Music in Katowice in 1959, and in 1965 musicological studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He obtained his doctorate at the University of Arts in Berlin. In the years 1966-1971 he worked as an editor at the Polish Music Publishing House in Kraków, and from 1968 as head of the Encyclopaedia Editorial Office. Lecturer at the Academy of Music in Katowice (in the years 1972-1995), where he taught music history, music sociology and music education methodology. His activity includes numerous scientific publications. He collaborated with the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice and other philharmonics in the country, as well as with Polish Radio and TVP. He was a music journalist in many professional and socio-cultural magazines. President of the Karol Szymanowski Music Society (since 1994, for 5 terms). Member of the jury of the SPAM "Orfeusz" Award at the "Warsaw Autumn" Festival. For his services he was honored with many awards, including the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. He was a person with a big heart, full of passion and commitment, with an extraordinary personal culture, always warm and smiling. We express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
